Verify Alice's key
With encrypted chat, your messages are locked on this device so that only Alice's machine in Dorset can open them. Our web host and the networks in between pass on scrambled data they can't read. This page checks, from your own device, that the key you'd be locking them to really belongs to Alice's machine.
Checking the key…
Encrypted chat (beta)
While we test it, encrypted chat is switched on per device. It works the same as usual. If Alice can't be reached and your message sounds like you're in danger, this device shows crisis help by itself.
What this does and doesn't prove
- It proves the key comes from Alice's machine, so nobody on the way can swap in their own and read your messages.
- Our web host still sees that you sent a message, when, roughly how big it was, and which model you chose. It doesn't see the words.
- Like any website, you're trusting the code we send your browser. That's true of every web app with encryption, including WhatsApp Web. We're working on publishing the encryption code so anyone can check it.
- Encrypted chat covers chats. Deep Work, the home-page demo and Check before you send aren't encrypted end to end yet.
